About Us, St John Ambulance
We are the nation’s leading first aid and care charity, dedicated to saving lives, as well as being one of the countries leading youth organisations.
Our mission is to provide:
• First aid and medical support services
• Caring services in support of community needs
• First aid training and personal development opportunities for young people
St John Ambulance (SJA) is about ordinary people doing extraordinary things through the dedication and professionalism of our volunteers. You probably know us for our ambulances and volunteers at local and major events, a reassuring sight that has saved many lives. You may also know us for our first aid training, but in fact we do much much more.
What you may not know is that in the UK alone, over 50,000 volunteers give in excess of 5 million hours of their time every year in order to save, treat and care for those who need it. Last year we provided first aid training to over 550,000 people and treated over 130,000 casualties. Very much the unsung heroes.
As one of the UK’s largest youth organisations we help our youth to develop inter personal skills, promote good citizenship and community involvement, build confidence and help them achieve their full potential.
In addition, and importantly, we assist the nation’s Ambulance service and support the emergency services in times of crisis or national disaster, such as the ‘7/7’ bombings and the Royal Marsden fire. We provide first aid cover to the local community through our ‘Community First Responders’, who give life saving assistance to patients until the ambulance arrives. We respond to community needs by developing caring projects to address social concerns such as the young, the elderly, homeless and disadvantaged.
Our mission is to ensure that everyone can receive first aid support whether at home, work, or whilst having fun and to get access to first aid training, so as to have the basic skills and confidence to make a vital difference when needed.
Indeed 1 in 5 people will be helped by SJA at some point in their life - whether it is simple first aid to treat a cut, resuscitation after a heart attack or during our support to the emergency services.
We change lives: we save lives
